Here is an exact excerpt taking from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, right at the beginning of Chapter Thirty Four: Prior Incantatem :
“Very good,” said Voldemort softly, and as he raised his wand the pressure bearing down upon Harry lifted too. “And now you face me, like a man… straight-backed and proud, the way your father died… “
Look at that last part.
Straight-backed and proud.
Well, of course. Anyone (like me) who focuses on the Marauders more than the actual characters of Harry Potter, knows that James Potter was always this way.
It’s actually a very impressive point.
Because this is actually an indirect compliment from Voldemort.
Straight-backed and proud.
So why, do tell, would J.K. Rowling put this next excerpt in?
This was taken from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, right after Nagini bit Harry, and he saw the night his parents died:
He was over the threshold as James came sprinting into the hall. It was easy, too easy, he had not even picked up his wand…
“Lily, take Harry and go! It’s him! Go! Run! I’ll hold him off!”
Hold him off, without a wand in his hand!… He laughed before casting the curse…
“Avada Kedavra!”
The green light filled the cramped hallway, it lit the pram pushed against the wall, it made the banisters glow like lighting rods, and James Potter fell like a marionette whose strings were cut…
James didn’t pick up his wand.
This doesn’t sound like the James Potter that we’ve come to know.
Think of everything that’s going on. These are truly dark times. Everyone’s paranoid, and freaking out, because friends and neighbors are dying.
James is a part of the Order of the Phoenix.
He knows how to fight. He NEEDS to know how to fight, so that he can protect his loved-ones.
Plus, we need to also look at James in Hogwarts.
We’re going a bit out of canon here, but I’ve always imagined that James would never be found without his wand. He would always have it on him, in case he needs to be the hero, or use it for pranking.
I don’t know, it just doesn’t sit right with me.
Here Voldemort is pretty much saying that James gave him a good fight, but then it says that he just ran blindly towards Voldemort, and as such, died instantly?
What do you guys think?
